Lesson 1: The Sentence

Sentence
A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense.
Eg. Mr. Gates is a doctor.

Four kinds of sentences in English

  1.  Assertive Sentence:
    An Assertive sentence is a sentence that makes a statement
    eg.
    • He is a pilot.
    • Ray is not a lawyer
  2.   Interrogative Sentence:
    An Interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks a question. This sentence should end with a Question Mark (?).
    eg.
    • Do you know him?
    • Did John come to your house yesterday?
  3.   Imperative Sentence:
    An imperative sentence expresses a command, a request or a prayer.
    eg.
    • Please give me a glass of water.
    • Open the door.
    • Give us this day our daily bread.
  4.   Exclamatory Sentence:
    An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong emotion or feeling - happiness, sorrow, confusion, love, wonder etc. This sentence should end with an Exclamation Mark (!).
    eg.
    • I won the competition!
    • No, You can not go there!
    • I don't want to go to the hospital!
    • What a shame!
